 Welcome to the Professional Growth section of the Balsz School District Website

The Balsz School District supports and encourages professional growth. Each school has a professional growth committee representative that can help you find opportunities to obtain relevant college course work to improve your proficiency in your job and qualify for advancement on the salary schedule.

Professional Staff Development - From Governing Board Policy GCI-R

The District salary schedule is designed to encourage professional growth. It is the District's belief that professional growth should be a planned program.

All hours to be accepted for advancement on the schedule must show promise of improving the teacher's instructional service to the students of the District.

All persons requesting approval of semester hours for professional growth credit must use the District form "Request for Approval of Academic Credit." Information needed is the course number, name of subject, number of semester hours, the college or university in which the course will be taken, and a description of the course. All persons planning to enter a masters degree program must submit a Masters Degree Program Plan Review for approval.

"Request for Approval of Academic Credit" forms are available in school offices. Completed forms should be given to the teacher at the school serving on the professional growth committee.

It is the responsibility of the professional growth committee to evaluate all requests and make recommendations concerning each according to its merits. One (1) teacher and one (1) District office committee member must approve the request for the teacher to receive professional growth credit.

Graduate Courses (see Higher Ed Resources)

Graduate courses offered by accredited institutions of higher learning shall be acceptable if their stated purposes would help the educator improve service to the District in such areas as:

  • Instructional skill - courses that deal with methods, materials, recent developments related to the individual's assignment.
  • Better understanding of the child as a member of society and the human race - courses in psychology, anthropology, and sociology.
  • Better understanding of education and the education process - courses in philosophy, special education, curriculum, administration, supervision, and guidance and counseling.
  • Subject-matter fields.

Undergraduate Courses (see Higher Ed Resources)

Professional growth credit will be granted for undergraduate courses that meet the following criteria:

With prior approval, courses needed as a result of a change in teaching assignment.

With prior approval, courses needed to meet a District-identified direction in program requiring skills that cannot be acquired through graduate-level courses.

Courses on the approved undergraduate course list: computer courses, foreign language courses, Southwest studies, ESL courses, gifted courses, drug abuse courses, and sign language.

No more than nine (9) hours of undergraduate credits may be used in a salary move.

With prior approval, courses needed in the current job assignment as a result of changes in the state of the art of the subject matter taught.

Professional Growth Committee

A professional growth committee, which includes a teacher from each school, will be utilized to develop recommendations on professional growth. The Superintendent or someone appointed by the Superintendent will chair the committee.

Professional Growth Advancement on the Salary Schedule

All persons anticipating advancement on the salary schedule must notify the office of personnel on a form provided for this purpose the year prior to the advancement.

All hours must be verified by either grade slip or college transcript before October 1 of the contract year. Hours anticipated during the summer must be indicated to the administration no later than the date when the letter of intent for professional growth is due back into the District office for budget consideration for the coming school year. All hours included for payment in a fiscal year must be completed prior to August 30 of the fiscal year.
