The Technology committee meets yearly to review the Technology Plan progress. The current District plan expires next year so we took the opportunity this year to go through a new technology planning cycle.

The Technology Committee is an advisory committee

The planning progress was posted on the Technology Planning Committee blog site located at www.balsz.org/techplan. The site is still open for your comments and feedback.

There was a change noted tonight in the presentation for the Governing Board with regard to the plan dates. During the planning process we indicated this would be a five year plan in anticipation of developing a budget for a potential capital override. However, new requirements from the School and Libraries Division have indicated all technology plans should be three year plans and not five year plans. The Technology Plan is reviewed and modified annually at the very least. We are always seeking out ways to try and future proof the District technology as much as possible with each revision. We don't make extreme shifts from year to year as that would be very expensive. So, we are going to shift this from a five year plan to a three year plan. The Governing Board was asked to take note of this change when it comes time to consider the plan for approval next month. The change will only appear on the plan cover page. The change does not impact the plan contents or direction in the least.

This presentation was meant to share the plan components and progress with the governing board as well as consider any input the Board or other District Stakeholders may have. The plan will be brought back to the Governing Board at the May meeting to be considered for approval.

We have uploaded the full draft of the Technology Plan the Board received prior to the meeting tonight in full as well.

All comments on the blog are moderated.

Committee Members in Attendance:

Patricia Lacina - District Office
Fabiola Munoz - Parent
Vienna Munoz - Student
Marisa Espinoza - Balsz Office
Hazen Kor - District Office
Lesee Jonovich - Orangedale Teacher
Joy Weiss - Balsz Teacher
Amanda Goodrich - Brunson-Lee Teacher

This was a working meeting. I took all of the comments from the previous blog posts, disucssions, and Google Docs and organized them as strategies and action steps for the 5 major areas of the plan:

Student Learning
Leadership
Preparation and Development of Educators
Infrastructure
Parent/Community Engagement

Committee members were given an opportunity to break into groups and review the entire document, making additions and deletions as needed. The intent was to ensure the feedback from the committee and the district stakeholders was included as intended. Please feel free to download the draft document, make any comments or suggesstions and email it back to me (jmorgenthal@balsz.org). If you have a few comments only, you can make them in the comments section of this blog post as well.

We also reviewed the data from the K-2 teachers. Due to the nature of the data, we determined a 1:1 for K-8 would remain part of the Balsz 21st Century Classroom. For grades 3-8, we will continue to standardize on Windows based devices. These devices are easily managed for PARCC. They also have standard PARCC required hardware like keyboards and mice and would prove to be a famililar environment for testing. For K-2 however, we feel that pilot projects experimenting with different hardware would be appropriate to determine how to best meet the needs of the early elementary students. You will see that change in the balsz 21st Century Classroom slide.

The Technology Plan will be posted here in the final draft form and then presented to the Governing Board at the April, 2013 meeting as a presnentation item only. At that time the Board can provide feedback and/or ask questions. Then at a future meeting the plan will be submitted to the Governing Board for approval. The final step is to submit it to Arizona Department of Education. We invite all committee members to attend the Governing Board Meeting in April.

This was a working meeting. Committee Members broke into groups. They were given copies of the 3-5 and 6-8 Speak Up survey results. They were also given copies of the teacher survey. We asked Committee Members to review the blog comments from the first meeting and then look at the actual goal areas for the Technology Plan. We shared the goal areas via Google Docs and asked Committee Members to review the existing strategies and tasks and to add or delete as well. To fill out the templates there is a section for strategy and task. We provided this example:

Strategy vs Task - Strategy is what you are going to do. The task is what you need to do to accomplish the strategy. Example Strategy: Utilize an online assessment system for benchmarking and common formative assessments Example Action Step: Maintain the District's current ATI subscription for Galileo. It is not necessary to worry too much about this distinction. It is more important to get ideas down.

The groups and the links to the Google Docs are below.

The area that was not addressed was Leadership. If you were not at the meeting please follow the link for the Leadership Group and provide some input if possible.

Student Learning Group

Prep and Development of Educators Group

Parent Involvement Group

Leadership Group

A survey was also sent out to K-2 teachers to collect their feedback regarding technology. The committee will use this data to address K-2 in the plan.

We discussed the PARCC requirements

Committee members were introced to the Technology Planning Committee blog site. They were directed to review data that is posted there regarding technology literacy and technology use in the district.

Committee members were given direction to respond to the three blog posts labeled 'Feedback Meeting 1' and to encourage other stakeholders on their site to participate. These questions feed into the needs area of the overall plan.

The following goals are from the 'Leadership' section of The Arizona Long-Range Strategic Educational Technology Plan. Our district plan needs to be in alignment with these goals.

All leaders will:

• model, implement, and assess appropriate technology use at all levels of the teaching and learning process.
• have access to the appropriate tools and resources to guide instructional and administrative practice.
• implement a dynamic technology planning process that expands curricular and instructional opportunities to students.
• provide opportunities for sustained, relevant, timely and effective professional development

What do we need in the Technology Plan to achieve these goals?

Julie Morgenthal presented a power point that included the same slides that were presented to the Governing Board in December of 2010 (this is when the current plan was adopted). The presentation was structured in this way so that the original goal areas and initiatives could be reviewed. Then additional slides were added to include the District's progress on the current plan for each area. In the original plan we addressed topics such as the components of a 21st Century classroom as well as mobile device to student ratios. At the meeting, we revisited these areas and asked the committee for feedback. The feedback questions and summary responses have been included in the last few slides of the presentation (slides 18-22). Please look over the information in the power point and feel free to provide any feedback you may have regarding the plan.  This feedback can be left as a comment to this post or you can email me directly at jmorgenthal@balsz.org.  Please note that all comments are moderated.

The Committee welcomes all District Stakeholders to review the plan and provide feedback, recommendations, and comments.  The final plan will be uploaded for ADE to review during the second week of January, 2011.

We brainstormed ideas regarding technology topics applicable to the plan such as:  Administrative Needs, What does a 21st Century classroom in Balsz look like?, What are major concerns in the district regarding technology?, What does professional development for technology integration in Balsz look like?, and What are some things I love about technology in the district?  This brainstorm occured on large chart paper where everyone walked around and shared their ideas.  Then all the committee members present were asked to revisit each sheet and mark the three items they felt were most important. We recorded the results on a Google spreadsheet. Here is the link to the spreadsheet with the topics, ideas generated, and the number of votes among the committee members for each item.:

The first Technology Planning Committee meeting is on March 23, 2010 in the Brunson-Lee Media Center.

Scope of our Project: This year, the District is required to revise and update our existing plan into a new state required template. The job of this committee is to assist with the planning for this update process and to serve long term as we will meet on an ongoing basis to evaluate the plan yearly. I anticipate this revision will require two to three physical meetings. We will also be using technology tools such as Google Docs and the District Website throughout the planning process. It is important the Technology Plan become the foundation for all of our technology purchases. It should also align with all the school/district consolidated plans. The plan is critical as we plan for erate upgrades, write grants, and design a vision for what Balsz should look like with respect to 21st Century Learning. Thank you in advance for the work you do and we hope you are able to assist us in this process.
